Toby Cotterill

Toby creates unique, articulated jewellery inspired by the natural world.
He grew up on a farm in West Wales, developing an innate affinity with natural history. His signature range, Arthropod, is a celebration of the diversity of life on earth. Arthropods, which include crustaceans and beetles, account for over 80% of all animal life, have developed an incredible variety of design, structure and colour. His jewellery celebrates these fantastic creatures, imagining them evolving onto and around the human body…
Toby’s creative passion is evident on the workbench in his use of direct material manipulation. Guided by traditional silversmithing techniques, forged silver forms emerge from beaten sheet metal, and come to life when animated with handmade mechanisms. He combines these with gold, resin and natural pigments to create lively, humorous pieces of wearable sculpture.
Toby Cotterill trained at CCTA in Carmarthen and at Staffordshire University, studying 3D Design: Crafts, where he specialised in fine metal and jewellery. He now makes from his rural workshop in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. His jewellery has been exhibited across the UK and in the USA.
