My whole way of working is built on an extensive knowledge of the technical aspects of goldsmithing, through which I express a contemporary aesthetic. The skill in the making undoubtedly contributes to the overall effect of the finished piece, in a sensual way, however I intend my craft to remain very much at the service of my art. I am preoccupied with the surfaces of precious metals and with form – juxtaposing the play of light, reflection, lustre with characteristic expressions of angle, curve and line. I am intrigued, too, by the potential for dialogue between inner and outer planes, with random patterns held in tension within strictly delineated edges, and the visual dynamic created by the contrast and harmony of all these factors. Technically I have been trying to extend the possibilities of fusion between gold and platinum, employing platinum gauze, mesh, distressed fragments, tesserae, wire and gold dust to create a variety of surfaces from which I construct my jewellery. I rarely do a drawing of a piece before I make it, preferring to create it directly in the metals so that I can keep my mind open to all kinds of possibilities and avoid fixing any detail right up to the completion of a piece.
