Maria Whetman
I am based in West Devon in the Tamar Valley where I have a small workshop. I have been working as a jeweller, designer and maker under the name Fluxplay and as a teacher in schools and colleges since I graduated with a BA.hon's in Jewellery design from Central Saint Martins School of Art & Design in 1992. Over the years I have worked in education as an artist-in-residence, full-time and part-time teacher, course management, workshop developer and provider. Currently I am a lecturer and course leader of BA Jewellery & Silver-smithing at Plymouth College of Art & Design in Devon and I was for several years one of the guest tutors at the Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery. Currently in conjunction with my teaching role and own practice, I am studying part-time for a Masters in Design, where methodologies for design thinking, creative processes and materials combinations are my main focus.

I enjoy designing and making new works, playing with materials, shapes, compositions and try very hard to produce highly affordable jewellery, the emphasis away from "precious" but maintaining originality and individually handworked pieces.

Skills and capabilities:

The teaching of and implementation of; repousse and chasing, press-forming, roll-printing, silver soldering, small metals construction techniques, piercing, riveting and cold connections, forming, sinking, raising, mount making and stone setting, anodising aluminium, embossing, etching, enamel, mixed media and more. I sometimes make my own tools and equipment. I have a high level of traditional drawing skill, am computer literate, competent with a digital camera and photoshop. I hold a clean, advanced car and motorbike driving license, including minibus driving experience of many years.

I am a polite, well-presented, outgoing and enthusiastic individual with comprehensive maker and teacher skills-set, underpinned by a broad range of experience. I understand the importance of good communication and quality of workmanship. Organisation, teamwork, planning and implementation of processes in a prompt and efficient manner are key attributes. The ability to operate flexibly complements my creative and open-minded nature, necessary for opening creative realisations and technical ability in my students. Enormous enthusiasm and a serious work ethic drives me as an independent maker.

I make many different styles of jewellery, mostly 'narrative' in mixed metals and materials, sometimes commercial or traditional…wedding rings for example. My current range features press-formed redundant tins as main materials and the designs incorporate humour and individuality to complement the featured fragment of packaging design.
