Caroline Brogden

Caroline Brogden is a self-taught jewellery designer-maker specialising in hand carving waste surfboard resin (known as Surfite). She combines these hand-carved Surfite shapes with recycled precious metals to create unique coastal inspired wearable art. Caroline has built her own adapted lapidary wheels using recycled materials and powers it using solar and harvested water. Her work is material-led but with a deep connection to her desire to work in a sustainable and ecological manner.

Caroline creates bold, contemporary jewellery using Surfite, a by-product of surfboard manufacturing, and recycled precious metals.
The Surfite is all sourced from British board shapers and is purchased as part of a circular economy. Her work is deeply inspired by her daily walks along the coast of Anglesey as she aims to evoke the wearers memories of days by the sea whilst also promoting sustainability by transforming waste into beautiful, wearable art.
As a self-taught maker Caroline has adapted traditional lapidary techniques to carve and shape the waste material by hand. Once the initial shape is carved the Surfite has to go through several rounds of sanding and polishing to help refine the shape before she can add her custom precious metal details. Her designs often feature wave-like forms and fluid lines with a coastal aesthetic; reinforcing her connection to sustainability and the ocean.
Caroline started in 2019 and has an experimental, material-led approach to her work; she seeks to create conversation around the ideas of sustainability and circular design.
