Elisabeth Hawkes
Inspired by rivers and patterns of water, Elisabeth combines textile and silversmithing techniques to create unique pieces of jewellery in fine and sterling silver.
Elisabeth began making jewellery 25 years ago and studied at the John Cass School of Art in London, where she gained a City & Guilds in Precious Jewellery. Shortly afterwards she moved back to her home county of Yorkshire, where she went on to set up Watermark Gallery in Harrogate, selling work by contemporary artists and makers. Surrounded by creativity, the pull of designing and making her own collection became too great and when the gallery closed in 2024 she had the opportunity to turn full-time to designing and making precious jewellery from her home studio near Ripon.
Launched in summer 2025, the inspiration for her inaugural collection comes from the rivers in North Yorkshire, “I’ve always loved the patterns made by the flow of water over rocks, their irregular shapes, and the space between stone and shale on the water’s edge. The sections of river in the Yorkshire Dales at Grassington, Burnsall and Buckden have always been places that I’ve visited throughout my life.”
Elisabeth also has a love of textiles and had a eureka moment when she discovered she could knit with silver to replicate the patterns of flow across the water. For many of the pieces in her collection she has embossed fine silver knitting on to pieces of silver sheet. This work is combined with signature, irregular shapes created from sterling silver wire and sheet.
