Designer maker, Mandy Nash, set up her workshop in 1983 directly after leaving the Royal College of Art. She discovered anodised aluminium when studying jewellery and silversmithing at Birmingham Polytechnic and has been working with it ever since; its lightness enables her to make large, bold pieces which are wearable and affordable. Most importantly, by anodising it, she can achieve bright and brilliant colour effects.
Her three passions are colour, pattern and technique and much of her inspiration comes from her travels around the world. She loves making things and exploring the possibilities of different materials. Although trained as a jeweller, her work has been heavily influenced by both traditional and contemporary textiles. Much of her recent work has evolved from looking back at her creative ancestry - how her grandmothers initiated her fascination with making objects by passing on their traditional textile skills and starting her passion in creating anything from colourful materials. Over the last twenty years she has also been developing work in felt, combining this with her jewellery practice, creating both functional and non functional work. In 2010, She received an Arts Council of Wales grant to help purchase a laser cutter enabling her to develop new work in taffeta, acrylic, cardboard and wood.
She is regional co-ordinator and chair of the International Feltmakers Association, a member of the Makers Guild in Wales, the Association of Contemporary Jewellery, MaP, a textile group and the Society of Designer Craftsmen. She has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, Japan, USA and Canada.
She finds being creative addictive and considers herself extremely lucky to have survived (more or less!) by selling her own work.
